FARIBAULT COUNTY MAN FACING FELONY ARSON AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY CHARGES RELATED TO A HOUSE FIRE IN MARTIN COUNTY LAST YEAR. ACCORDING TO THE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT 49 YEAR OLD ROBERT RAPHAEL SCHULTZ OF WELLS IS CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE ARSON AND FIRST DEGREE DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AFTER A HOUSE FIRE IN GRANADA LAST AUGUST. SCHULTZ FACES MAXIMUM PENALTIES OF 20 YEARS IN PRISON AND $20,000 FINE FOR ARSON AND 5 YEARS JAIL TIME AND $10,000 FINE FOR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.

FIRE CREWS, MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES AND A STATE PATROL TROOPER WERE DISPATCHED TO THE REPORT OF A FIRE IN GRANADA ABOUT 6:15 AM AUGUST 18. UPON ARRIVAL LAW ENFORCEMENT FOUND SCHULTZ IN A BACK DOOR REFUSING TO COME OUT OF THE BURNING BUILDING. ONE DEPUTY WAS FINALLY ABLE TO DRAG SCHULTZ AWAY FROM THE BURNING BUILDING AND THE WAS CHARGED AT BY SCHULTZ BEFORE BEING AIDED BY ANOTHER SHERIFF'S DEPUTY IN ORDER TO APPREHEND THE SUSPECT.

THE STATE FIRE MARSHALL AND TWO GRANADA FIREFIGHTERS EXAMINED THE HOUSE AND DECIDED THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS THE STOVE AND THAT THE OVEN HAD SEVERAL ITEMS PLACED INSIDE IT BEFORE THE FIRE STARTED. CHARRED REMAINS OF PAPER, WOOD AND KITCHEN UTENSILS WERE FOUND IN THE OVEN. UPON QUESTIONING AT SCENE ROBERT RAPHAEL SCHULTZ ALLEGEDY ADMITTED THAT HE" BURNED THE HOUSE DOWN". WITNESS CLAIMED HE WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE. DAMAGE ESTIMATE IS $15,400 DOLLARS.
