- Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) recently awarded 20,000 children’s books valued at $363,400 to 49 organizations through its Early Childhood Literacy Grant Program. This grant supports early literacy efforts that enhance school readiness for children birth to age five by providing children with books.  The books were awarded in partnership with Capstone and ABDO, Mankato-based publishers of children’s books and digital products and services. In 2002, Capstone helped launch the BookStart program, working with SMIF to distribute thousands of books to children in the region over a period of 15 years. THE SHERBURN FIRE DEPARTMENT, WITH MUTUAL AID FROM THE WELCOME AND TRIMONT FIRE DEPARTMENTS, WERE DISPATCHED TO A HOUSE FIRE REPORTED AT 1393 90TH AVENUE NEAR FOX LAKE. THE CALL CAME JUST AFTER 5:30 THURSDAY MORNING. ALL THE PEOPLE WERE REPORTEDLY SAFE OUTSIDE OF THE HOME BUT THE PETS WERE NOT AT TIME THE DEPARTMENTS WERE DISPATCHED.

The American Red Cross has a critical shortage of type O blood and urges eligible donors to give now to help patients facing trauma and other life-threatening situations. As a thank-you for helping replenish the blood supply, all donors who come to give blood now through June 10 will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email. The Fairmont Area School Board approved an early release for high school seniors who have assignments completed, fines paid and detention made up. Seniors have been getting out of school several days earlier than the rest of the student body for the past several years. The last day of school for seniors will be May 29. The rest of the students will be in school through May 31. Three people at Fairmont Area were recognized for their 25 years of service to the district at the school board meeting Tuesday. The Fairmont City Council on Monday released an attorney’s summary that quashes the recall petition for Councilor at LargeTom Hawkins . Council member Ruth Cyphers suggested reading a letter from an attorney summarizing the attorney-client privileged memorandum in which Robert T. Scott, an attorney with the St. Paul law firm of Flaherty and Hood, analyzed and offered advice on how the city should handle the recall petition for Hawkins.
