A committee of  citizens has filed the necessary papers to initiate a recall election of Tom Hawkins, Fairmont councilman at-large, stating his recent actions constitute “an abuse of power.” The petition is referring to Hawkins initiating efforts to eliminate the current in-house city attorney position, held by Elizabeth Bloomquist for 30 years, without any prior discussion or input from the majority of the other council members. 19 Committee members bear the responsibility of collecting 881 signatures of Fairmont citizens who are registered voters. On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, Martin County Emergency Management convened key county departments, city and township representatives, as well as other agency stakeholders in a 2-hour Planning Team Meeting for the update of the Martin County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP). The meeting was held at the Martin County Law Enforcement Center in Fairmont and was facilitated by the University of Minnesota – Duluth Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC) project team who are leading the update of the County plan. The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board has chosen a new Superintendent/Principal. He is Doug Storbeck, currently the Principal at St. James Public Schools. GHEC’s current Superintendent, Mandy Fletcher, has accepted the same position  at Blue Earth Area Schools effective July 1. The new GHEC Superintendent also starts July 1. The school board is in contract negotiations with Storbeck. A school board vote on a contract is slated for May 9.
