The Fairmont Martins will meet the Quamba Cubs in the first round of the Class C State Amateur Baseball tournament. The game is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday at Joe Schleper Stadium in Shakopee. This is the 25th all-time state tournament appearance for the Martins, with championships in 1930, 1959, and 2020.
Other teams from Region 10C advancing include the champion Windom Pirates, who will take on Clearwater in the game following the Martins clash on Saturday in Shakopee. The Luverne Redbirds will be taking the field Sunday at 11 a.m. in New Prague against the Dumont Saints.
Fall sports practices for Minnesota high school teams got underway on Monday. The first competition for a Fairmont team will be the girls tennis squad hosting Spirit Lake for a scrimmage on Saturday at 9 a.m. Soccer will be hosting pre-season scrimmages at Jeffery Kot Fields on Saturday as well, hosting several area teams including St. James/Windom, Mankato Loyola/LCWM, Waseca, and Dover/Eyota.
The Vikings have lost Jamal Adams for the season, but he will still be part of the team. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday that Adams’ presence will be welcomed at the facility following surgery to repair a torn quad tendon. Minnesota has placed Adams on injured reserve and signed cornerback Bryce Phillips to fill his spot on the roster.
The Twins put an end to their losing streak after topping the Atlanta Braves 4-2 to open their series at Target Field. Josh Bell led the way at the plate after going two for three with a pair of runs batted in. Minnesota had dropped three straight and will continue its three-game set tonight, 6 p.m. pre-game on KSUM. Zebby Matthews will take his 6-8 record to the mound for Minnesota, facing former Twin Tyler Mahle, who is 4-9 for Atlanta this season.
The Lynx continue their four-game road trip tomorrow. Minnesota is visiting the Golden State Valkyries in a battle of the two teams with the best records in the WNBA. The Lynx are the hottest team in the league, winning 14 of their last 15 games.
Minnesota United FC is looking to extend its unbeaten streak. The Loons have played to a draw in each of their last three regular season games. Minnesota hosts Atlanta United FC tomorrow at Allianz Field.
