The Green Plains Energy plant in Fairmont closed abruptly on Thursday, January 16th. The plant, which according to the Green Plains website had 59 employees, had been in operation since 2014. The plant, which originally opened in 2008, was purchased from BioFuel Energy along with a plant in Wood River, Nebraska in 2012 for $101 million.

The company, headquartered in Omaha, also owns facilities in Superior, and Shenandoah, Iowa, along with three other ethanol plants in Nebraska.
