FAIRMONT — The Martin County Library has launched its first Community Reads program, focusing on helping kids and families navigate technology and screen time. This year’s selection is The Amazing Generation: Your Guide to Fun and Freedom in a Screen-Filled World, aimed at children ages nine to 12. The library purchased 150 copies through a grant from the Traverse de Sioux Library Cooperative. Each reader also receives a workbook with challenges, questionnaires and activities focused on screen habits. More than half of the books had already been picked up within the first few weeks. Library officials say the goal is to get kids, parents, teachers and other community members talking about technology, social media and how to use technology as a tool rather than allowing it to take over daily life. A panel discussion involving school board members, teachers and students will be held October sixth from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Martin County Library, along with a screen-free program for kids. Additional book discussions are scheduled for November fifth, ninth and 18th. Books are available at the Martin County Library during regular hours, while supplies last.
